Selling a used Liebherr gear machine, such as an LC hobbing machine, an LS gear shaper, an LK power skiving machine or an LCS or LGG gear grinder? We buy your machine. Which route depends on machine, condition and market. Send the nameplate, build year, control and photos, and you get a first estimate. The overview of all processes and brands is on Sell gear cutting machines.
Below you find first what decides the value and how the sale works, then a reference to the Liebherr series and the names under which older machines are listed. Manufacturer data comes from publicly available Liebherr sources (as of 29 September 2026, see Sources); from dealer listings we take only names and spellings, never technical values.
What decides the value of a used Liebherr gear machine
We state no prices on this page, because the value depends heavily on the individual machine. These factors decide which buyers are interested. The full self-check is in the guide What is my gear machine worth?.
- Process, series and size: workpiece diameter and maximum module define which gears the machine can make. The range runs from the LC 180 with 180 mm workpiece diameter to the large LC machines with up to 12,000 mm.
- Control generation: current machines work with LHGearTec. According to Liebherr’s customer magazine, Reman machines run the LH 90 control. On older machines it matters whether control and drives can still be maintained and spare parts are available.
- Proof of accuracy: test and acceptance records, information on the gear quality the machine achieves, and the date of the last geometry check build buyer confidence.
- Reman and retrofit: Liebherr offers Reman, a general overhaul of used hobbing, shaping and grinding machines. According to the manufacturer it applies to machines from build year 2000; Liebherr’s customer magazine names Kempten, Saline (Michigan, USA) and Guaratinguetá (Brazil) as locations. Liebherr also describes modernisation services such as software upgrades, rebuilds and mechanical upgrades. If your machine has had any of this, the documentation is among the most important papers: scope, date, control status and who did the work.
- Automation: if the machine is connected to a Liebherr automation system such as a gantry robot or a conveyor and pallet system, tell us. It affects the buyer group and the dismantling effort.
- Condition and accessories: operating hours, condition of spindles and rotary table, and accessories such as hob arbors, shaper heads, counter supports or dressers belong in every assessment.
- Weight and dismantling: gear machines are heavy. According to Liebherr’s brochure (03.17) the LS 200 to LS 500 series weighs about 18 to 21 tonnes (version F 18,000 to 19,000 kg, version E 20,000 to 21,000 kg). The large LC machines are heavier still.
What we need from you
- Nameplate: type, serial number and build year, as printed.
- Control and hours: control type, software version if known, operating hours.
- Documents: test or acceptance records, proof of Reman or retrofit, accessory list.
- Photos: nameplate, overall view, workpiece or rotary table area, control, accessories such as arbors or shaper heads.
- Site details: foundation, door and crane access, whether the machine is still connected.
None of this is a precondition for a first look; missing items we ask for specifically.
How selling your Liebherr gear machine works
- Send details and photos. The list above is enough to start.
- First estimate. We assess the machine. The offer usually follows 24–48 hours on working days after we have all the details. Where it is urgent we can visit on site usually within 48 to 72 hours on working days.
- Dismantling and transport. We organise both. For heavy machines we clarify foundation, access and lifting equipment with you early. Whether the costs are included is stated in the offer upfront.
- Payment before pickup (direct purchase). No machine leaves your site without confirmed payment.
The whole process usually takes 7 to 15 working days on a direct purchase. Sale through our buyer network: commission stated upfront; you are paid before pickup. The general process is described on How it works.

What we do not buy
This page covers gear machines from Liebherr-Verzahntechnik. Not covered are finished gears and gearboxes, as well as hobs, shaper cutters, skiving tools and other single tools, even though Liebherr makes such gear tools itself. Components from other Liebherr business units, such as the diesel and hydraulic components in the Liebherr-Ettlingen Reman brochure, are also outside this page. If you are unsure, send the nameplate and we tell you how we classify the item.
Liebherr-Verzahntechnik: who the manufacturer is
The brand belongs to Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH in Kempten (Allgäu). According to Liebherr the company has built gear machines since 1952, first in Kirchdorf an der Iller. It began building gear hobbing machines itself in order to obtain gears for transmissions. Production moved to Kempten in 1962, and the company has carried its present name since 1969. The Liebherr group was founded in 1949 by Hans Liebherr and is family-owned.
The range covers gear hobbing, gear shaping, generating and profile grinding, power skiving and gear measuring technology, plus automation such as gantry robots and conveyor, storage and pallet handling systems. No name or ownership change that would confuse a seller is documented for Liebherr-Verzahntechnik. Confusion arises elsewhere:
- Lorenz: the Maschinenfabrik Lorenz of Ettlingen later became part of Liebherr-Verzahntechnik. Today the name exists only as a used-market and service term.
- Liebherr-Ettlingen GmbH: its Reman brochure covers diesel and hydraulic components, a different business unit. It has nothing to do with the Reman programme for gear machines.
- Model codes: the series LC, LS, LK, LCS and LGG and older numbers such as LC 82 or LC 282 are easily mixed up in listings. The next sections sort them.
Liebherr series at a glance
The codes tell you the process at once: LC is gear hobbing, LS is gear shaping, LK is power skiving, LCS and LGG are generating and profile grinding. Dealers also list LFS, WS and WSC as gear shapers. The table gives values as Liebherr states them on its product pages and in brochures. Several values in one cell stand for several module steps or versions of the same series. DC marks LC versions with integrated chamfering, M stands for the manually loaded or manual variant on several series. For your machine, the nameplate is what counts.
| Series | Process | Max. workpiece Ø (mm) | Max. module |
|---|---|---|---|
| LC 180, LC 280 (also LC 280 DC) | Gear hobbing | 180 / 280 | 4 / 6 |
| LC 300, LC 500 (also with DC), LC 700 M | Gear hobbing | 300 / 500 / 700 | up to 16 (several steps) |
| LC 400 M | Gear hobbing, manually loaded | 400 | 8 |
| LC 600 to LC 2000 | Gear hobbing | 600 to 2,000 | 27 / 22 / 16 |

| LK 300, LK 500 (also with DC), LK 700 M | Power skiving | 300 / 500 / 700 | 8 |
| LGG 180, LGG 280, LGG 400 M | Generating and profile grinding | 180 / 280 / 400 | 6 (grinding head GH 320) |
| LGG 300, LGG 380, LGG 500, LGG 700 M | Generating and profile grinding | 300 / 380 / 500 / 700 | up to 14 |
| LCS 600 to LCS 1200 | Generating and profile grinding, large workpieces | 600 to 1,200 | generating up to 14 |
A few details that matter for classification:
- Controls: on the current hobbing machines Liebherr names the operating interface LHGearTec, with a fixed LHStation and a mobile LHMobile hand terminal, for example on the LC 400 M.
- LS versions F and E: F works with mechanical guidance, E with electronically controlled helical guidance. According to the brochure (03.17) the shaper heads SK 1.70 (module 5), SKE 120 (module 8) and SKE 240 (module 12) are available.
- LK and LGG: Liebherr gives a maximum workpiece weight of 25 kg for the LK 180 and LK 280 and 100 kg for the LK 300, LK 500 and LK 700 M. The LCS series was introduced in 1988 and, according to Liebherr’s customer magazine, appeared in three generations (1988 to 1998, 1998 to 2004, 2005 to 2020); the LGG series has followed since 2020.

Older designations and dealer names
Used Liebherr machines are listed under names that do not match today’s product pages. We found no manufacturer statement that maps the older two- and three-digit numbers to the current series, so do not treat them as equivalent.
| Spelling in a listing | What is meant | Note |
|---|---|---|
| LC 82, LC 182, LC 282, LC 502, LC 752, LC 1203, LC 3000 CNC | Gear hobbing machines (dealer term: gear hobbing machine, vertical) | Not automatically equal to today’s LC 180 or LC 280 |
| LC 380 and LC380 | Gear hobbing machine | Both spellings occur |
| L 301, L 400, L 900, L 901, L 2200 | Gear hobbing machines of the older L series | German dealers call them Zahnradhobelmaschinen; ‘Hobel’ here means hobbing |
| LFS 200, LFS 380, LS 200F, WS 1, WS 501, WSC 501, WSC 1200 | Gear shaping machines | ‘Zahnradformmaschine’ is a pure dealer term for shapers |
| LCS 182, LCS 282, LCS 700 | Gear grinding machines | LCS is Liebherr’s generating and profile grinding series |
| LS 400, LS 424, LS 630, LS 1000 (Lorenz) | Historic Lorenz shaping machines | Not Liebherr LS 180, LS 300 or LS 500: different make, different era |
The market uses several terms for the same machine: gear hobbing machine, gear shaper, gear grinder, gear cutting machine. Just give us the type designation from the nameplate and you do not have to commit to one term.
A word on data quality: build years and technical values in dealer listings are not always reliable. Contradictory module figures and even build years in the future occur, which is why we check every figure against your nameplate and documents.
Other gear machine brands
If you have machines from several makers: we also assess machines from Gleason-Pfauter (hobbing, shaping, profile grinding), Klingelnberg, Kapp Niles and Reishauer. Lorenz machines are covered under gear shaping machines. German makers in general: Sell German machine brands.
