If you have a machining center and want to sell it, we’ll give you a no-obligation initial assessment for brands and configurations with secondary-market demand. We prioritize well-maintained machines; we assess the rest just as honestly. No commission applies when we buy directly, and we recommend the sales route that suits your situation.
Machining centers are, at their core, metalworking machines: they cut steel, aluminum, titanium, and other metals to tolerances in the hundredths of a millimeter. If you are specifically looking to sell used metalworking machines from your machine shop — a VMC, HMC, 5-axis center, or a complete production cell — you are in the right place: among used metal machines, the machining center is the most common single case in this category.
Vertical machining centers (VMC) — the most common machine
The 3-axis VMC is the most common machine in industrial machining. We buy everything from mid-range machines — Haas VF series, Mazak VCN, Doosan DNM — to high-end vertical machines with a Heidenhain or Siemens control. The three most important valuation factors are: table size, magazine capacity, and spindle hours.
The most active VMCs on the European secondary market are the Haas VF-3 and VF-4 (thanks to production volume and parts availability) and the Mazak VCN-530C (thanks to its performance-to-value ratio).
Horizontal machining centers (HMC) — maximum productivity in series production
The HMC is the series-production machine par excellence. With a horizontally positioned spindle and the ability to machine four sides of a cubic workpiece in a single operation, it’s the core of automotive, aerospace, and capital-goods production lines.
We buy HMCs with and without a pallet system: DMG NHX 4000/5000/6300, Mazak HCN-4000/5000/6800, Okuma MA-400H/550H/600H, Heller H 2000/4000, Grob G350/G550, Chiron FZ series, Makino a51/a61/a71/a81.
An HMC with comparable specs to a VMC is worth 30% to 80% more on the secondary market. More information is on the dedicated HMC page.
Universal 5-axis machining centers — maximum value retention
5-axis machining centers have the highest value retention of any machine tool category. Two main configurations with distinct markets:
- Swivel head + rotary table: DMU 50/70/85, Hermle C series, Mazak Variaxis. Preferred in aerospace and high-precision mold making.
- Rotary table + swivel spindle (trunnion): Haas UMC-750/1000, Mikron HEM/HPM. More widespread in high-end general-purpose shops.
“A 5-axis Hermle C42 is significantly superior to a 3-axis VMC of the same year on resale. That difference is only realized by selling to the right buyer in the right market,” emphasizes Marcel Brockmann, CEO and co-founder of webuyyourmachinetools.com.
Machining center purchase: brands with the highest active demand
| Brand | Most sought series | What we value most | Target market |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMG MORI | DMU, DMC, NHX, CMX | CELOS, coolant-through-spindle, magazine ≥30 tools | Global, automotive, aerospace |
| Hermle | C22–C65, U600–U1200 | Spindle hours <10,000, iTNC 530/TNC 640 control | Central Europe, aerospace, mold making |
| Mazak | Variaxis, VCN, HCN | SmoothG/SmoothX, Palletech pallet loading | Global, series production |
| Haas | VF-2 to VF-6, UMC-750/1000 | NGC, TSC, 4th axis | Global, mid-range |
| Okuma | MB, MA, MU | OSP-P300, swivel/rotary table, high speed | Asia, Europe, North America |
| Makino | a61, a81, D500 | Spindle speed, APC, Pro5 control | Japanese automotive, aerospace |
We also assess Matsuura, Chiron, Grob, Heller, Hedelius, Fanuc Robodrill, Deckel Maho (classic and current), Alzmetall, Quaser, DN Solutions, and other Asian brands when there’s demonstrated export demand.
Five factors that determine the real price
1. CNC control and generation
The CNC control is the decisive differentiator between two mechanically identical machines. A Heidenhain TNC 640 consistently raises the value, the older iTNC 530 less so. A Siemens 840D SL does too, especially on HMC machines for the automotive industry. Older-generation controls — Heidenhain TNC 155, Fanuc 6M, Siemens 810D — are functional but reduce the achievable price in the export market.
2. Spindle hours
The most objective indicator of actual mechanical wear. Updated reference scale:
- Under 5,000 hrs: excellent condition, maximum price.
- 5,000–12,000 hrs: good condition with correct, documented maintenance.
- 12,000–20,000 hrs: requires a pre-purchase spindle inspection; price usually discounted 10–20%.
- Over 20,000 hrs: mandatory diagnostic; typically a 20–35% discount against the base price.
3. Magazine and tool capacity
A 60-position magazine versus a 20-position one can mean a 15–25% price increase. Quick-change systems (Capto C6 toolholders, HSK-A63, BT-40) also raise value, especially in markets where compatibility with existing tooling is a priority.
4. Special equipment
Through-spindle high-pressure coolant, dual or multi-pallet systems, integrated 4th and 5th axis, Renishaw workpiece probes, quick-change zero-point clamping systems (Erowa, System 3R): each option has a real, quantifiable multiplier on the secondary-market price.
5. Documented mechanical condition
Machines with a current geometric inspection report — spindle runout test, Renishaw ballbar check, axis backlash measurement — typically sell 10% to 20% faster and at a better price. We coordinate or carry out this diagnostic as part of the valuation process.
Buying complete automated FMS cells
We’re particularly active in buying complete FMS cells (Flexible Manufacturing Systems). A typical cell includes:
- 2–8 HMCs from the same family (same pallets, same toolholders)
- Automated pallet transport system (Fastems, Mazak Palletech, Erowa Robot, Schuler)
- MES production management software
- Centralized tooling system (presetting, automatic vending)
- Load/unload robots and chip conveyors
The total value of a well-configured FMS cell can be 2 to 3 times the sum of the individual machine values. We buy complete cells with a single negotiation, a single disassembly process, and full coordination of specialized logistics.
Price information by machining center type
For these types we have no reliable public price range, because not enough comparable listings state a price (as of October 2026). The value is determined by year, control, spindle hours, equipment, and condition.
| Type | Price information |
|---|---|
| VMC Mazak VCN-530C (SmoothG) | no reliable public range |
| HMC DMG NHX 4000 / 5000 (CELOS, dual pallet) | no reliable public range |
| HMC Mazak HCN-4000 (Palletech) | no reliable public range |
| 5-axis center DMG DMU 70 / DMU 85 | no reliable public range |
Why the buyer of a 5-axis or HMC center isn’t local
A private buyer looking for a conventional VMC wants price and geographic proximity. But the buyer willing to pay the real price for a premium HMC or 5-axis center is a company in another country: Turkey, Poland, Czech Republic, Mexico, India. These markets have expanding automotive and aerospace lines actively looking for high-quality used European machinery.
We maintain active contact with these end buyers. That lets us pay you more than you’d get in the local market.
