Grinding machines are the precision tools of metalworking. They achieve tolerances in the micrometer range that no other manufacturing technology can match. Their residual value on the secondary market is correspondingly high — if you know the right buyer.
We buy used grinding machines of all types, wherever they’re located: cylindrical, surface, profile, tool, and centerless grinders.
Grinding machine categories and their markets
External and internal cylindrical grinders
The most liquid market in grinding machinery. Manufacturers: Fritz Studer (CH), Kellenberger (CH), Schaudt (DE), Tacchella (IT), TOS (CZ).
Reasons to buy: precision shaft manufacturing, hydraulic components, gear shafts, precision spindles. Buyers are active in Europe, North America, and Asia. Studer clearly leads on value — see our Studer valuation page for details.
Surface grinders
For flat surfaces with high flatness. Manufacturers: Blohm (DE), Elb-Schliff (DE), Mägerle (CH), Jung (DE), Okamoto (JP).
Blohm Profimat and Orbit: very good residual value, strong demand from mold making and tool shops. Mägerle MFP: high-precision profile and surface grinder, sought-after niche market. Okamoto ACC: broad installed base, good pricing, especially strong in exports to Asia.
Profile grinders
For manufacturing special profiles in carbide and steel. Notable: Mägerle MFP series, Elb-Schliff CompactMaster, Blohm Profimat. A very specialized buyer pool — carbide tool manufacturers, precision mold makers. Rarely offered for sale, so pricing is correspondingly good.
Gear grinding machines — generating and profile grinding of gears — follow their own market logic with their own buyer pool.
Tool grinders
For grinding drills, mills, reamers, and special tools. Manufacturers: Walter (DE), Vollmer (DE), Anca (AU), Saacke (DE), Rollomatic (CH), Schneeberger (CH).
Walter Helitronic Power and Vision: the industry standard for solid-carbide tool grinding. Very active market. Anca TX7 and FX7: preferred in grinding services. Vollmer QXD/QPD: for PCD and CBN tools, lower unit numbers available, higher individual prices.
Centerless grinders
For series production of round parts without clamping. Manufacturers: Erwin Junker (DE), Lidköping (SE), Royal Master (US), Monnier+Zahner (CH), Schaudt Mikrosa.
The market is smaller, and value depends heavily on year of manufacture, grinding spindle and configuration; we have no reliable public price range for these machines. Buyers are specialized suppliers, ball bearing and roller bearing manufacturers.
Value retention by brand
Studer (cylindrical grinding) and Walter (tool grinding) retain their value over ten years particularly well — both are considered the premium brands with the most stable residual value in their segment, provided the spindle is sound. Blohm and Mägerle sit at a similarly solid level in surface and profile grinding. Junker (centerless grinding) and Kellenberger (cylindrical grinding) follow with somewhat lower but still good value retention. Okamoto and Eastern European brands like TOS Hostivar have a broader, more affordable market, but lose significantly more value compared to the European premium brands.
What determines the price of a grinding machine
Grinding spindle is the single most critical factor — across all types, all brands. Replacing a grinding spindle is a significant investment depending on design and manufacturer. A spindle test log (vibration measurement, bearing temperature, runout) is the most valuable document you can submit.
Dresser and dressing unit: In profile grinding, diamond dresser systems (especially CNC-controlled ones) are a significant value factor.
Control: Siemens 840D SL achieves more on the used market than proprietary controls. Walter’s own controls are an exception on Walter tool grinders — there, the proprietary control is proven and accepted.
Coolant system: High-pressure coolant supply and coolant conditioning (paper-band filters, magnetic separators) significantly increase value — especially for grinders working high-alloy steels and carbide.

“Premium-segment grinding machines have one of the most stable residual values in the used machinery trade — provided the spindle is sound. We always check that first.”
