The value of used CNC lathes varies considerably — depending on brand, generation, axis configuration and condition. If you don’t know the market, you either overpay or get shortchanged. This guide shows which factors determine the value.
Value classes by machine type
2-axis lathes (Z + X)
The standard of series turning. Roughing and finishing only, no milling, no sub-spindle. Sufficient for simple turned parts without complex geometry.
Entry level (Doosan, DN Solutions, Hyundai-WIA): build year and turning diameter determine the value. Mid-range (Mazak QT, DMG CTX classic, Okuma LB-EX): control, spindle hours and condition determine the value. Premium (Index CX, Spinner TC, older Gildemeister): brand and precision equipment support the value.
3-axis lathes (Z + X + Y or C)
The Y-axis enables off-center milling and drilling without re-clamping. The C-axis (positioning the spindle as a rotary axis) enables milling operations. Strong demand for complete machining in one setup.
Standard with C-axis (Mazak QT compact, DMG CTX 310): the C-axis widens the range of parts and adds value. With Y-axis (Mazak QT 250 MSY, DMG NLX 2500 SY): the Y-axis widens the range of parts further and is valued higher on the used market.
Turn-mill centers and multitasking machines
A B-axis (swiveling milling spindle) enables simultaneous turning and milling in a single setup. For complex parts that would otherwise need several machines.
Mid-range (Mazak Integrex E-420, DMG CTX gamma 1250 TC): build year, control and the condition of the B-axis determine the value. High-end (Mazak Integrex E-650, Okuma Multus B300, Index G220): build year, configuration and the condition of the B-axis determine the value.
Multi-spindle lathes
4–8 spindles for maximum output in mass production of small turned parts. Index MS40/42, Tornos MultiAlpha/Sigma, Davenport, Wickman.
Small multi-spindle machines (Index MS16): spindle count, build year and control generation determine the value. Medium and large multi-spindle machines (Index MS42, MS52): spindle count, build year and control generation determine the value.
Prices in public listings
Public listings rarely state a price: among the listings reviewed in October 2026 on Maschinensucher, Exapro and resale.de for Mazak Integrex, Quick Turn, Doosan Puma 2600, Okuma LB 3000 and Mori Seiki NL 2500, the large majority showed no price, only a request for one. An example with enough offers is the older Okuma LB 300 M/MY: five listings (build years 1999–2007) stated asking prices between €7,900 and €37,000. Details in the guide Sell an Okuma LB 300. Asking prices are not sale prices.
Which factors influence the price most
Spindle hours: On lathes, the main spindle and — where fitted — the sub-spindle and milling spindle are each relevant separately. Under 8,000 hours counts as low.
Sub-spindle: Adds value compared with the same machine without one.
Y-axis: A premium over pure Z/X machines, depending on the manufacturer.
Bar feeder interface: Whether an interface for an automatic bar feeder is present matters a great deal to series producers.
Control generation: Mazak SmoothG/SmoothX fetches more than older MAZATROL versions. FANUC 31i fetches more than 21i.
